Tips for sourcing affordable décor items

In my first blog I talked about reimagining your home or space. As a previous co-owner of a retail homewares store many customers would often ask about sourcing items that would work in their existing space for a fresh update.

Budget is always a discussion point, but people are conscious of the impact a throw away culture has on the environment, with a desire not to contribute to this.

If budget is critical, Vintage and not for profits shops are fabulous places to collect and source new pieces. Keep in mind some items especially furniture can be expensive. Collecting Vintage and Retro décor has become very popular, a word of caution new stock items come in and go very quickly.  If you find something you really love, grab it as it is likely someone else will to!

Some of my favourite décor items have come from vintage and not for profit stores.

Sourcing smaller items such as scented or unscented candles are another affordable option, my preference is to source from small artisan candle makers.

As a starting guide I have listed a few options remember if you have favourite local homewares stores connect with them as they are a great source of information, and you are supporting local. Makers and Artisan markets are a fun way to find some beautiful and unique decor items. I will create a list of a few of my favourites in coming blogs.

Keep an eye on my Instagram page as I share some great stories full of tips and inspiration.

If you have any feedback or comments, I would love to hear them. If you would like to collaborate, please reach out.

I hope you enjoy this latest blog!

Best wishes Tracey

I always encourage and promote using Australian artisans where possible and there are many.

  • Beautiful homeware items can be found at Woodfolk. Julia is a ceramicist and jeweller who has a stunning collection of homewares and accessories using ethically sourced materials, they are very popular as their unique design and colours makes them perfect for any space in your home. www.woodfolk.com.au

A couple of other suggestions

  • Haven and Space in Berry promote affordable style, and have some amazing bargains especially cushions, dinner ware, cane baskets, pictures, and small furniture items.  (you can order online). I really enjoy the instore experience at Haven and Space, and my advice if you can go check them out, Berry NSW is a gorgeous spot.  https://havenandspace.com.au/

  • The Base Warehouse is great budget friendly option. Great for homewares but also great for bulk buys such as party supplies.   www.thebasewarehouse.com.au

  • Kmart (yes Kmart have some great décor items use your discretion!) Think small vases, trays, outdoor cushions, and they have some great rugs that are well priced.  https://www.kmart.com.au/

  • Don’t forget Marketplace Facebook there are some great finds and you can sell items a well!

Candles

Candles are a non- negotiable for me, I also like non fragranced candles too.

I try to stay with Australian made and owned where possible!

A few of my favourites:

  • A Little Light. I just love Jo’s candles and designs, so many gorgeous items to choose from. I have some lovely designs some I burn some I don’t as I love them as a décor art. I highly recommend checking out her website and reading her story. I hope to add some online stock in coming months, and they will be at the top of my list. https://alittlelight.com.au

  • Posie.  Top of my list for fragranced candles. I love the amber collection in particular and the simple design! Great décor item with benefits!. https://www.weareposie.com.au

  •  L’ASCARI Crystal Potpourri I discovered L’ASCARI at a trade show last year and thought the concept was fantastic. I was never a fan of the highly perfumed potpourri and found it messy. This is a clever design concept and I always get asked about my Crystal Potpourri in my own home.  https://www.lascari.com.au
